The Atlantic Maritime Economy Observatory becomes operational www.atome.es

The Atlantic Maritime Economy Observatory (ATOME) aims at being an efficient tool that provides updated information about and for the different economic activities that are developed in the coastal maritime environment (Maritime Economy) in the 5 countries that integrate the “Atlantic Area” (Spain, France, Ireland, Portugal and United Kingdom).

The main activity of the ATOME observatoy will be mainly focused on three distinct areas:

1. Developing indicators and indeces to measure the evolution among and between the different regions.
2. Report actions, projects and R&D activities about the different actors of the Maritime Economy in the five countries of the Atlantic Area.
3. Encourage cooperation among researchers and the public and private sectors, in order to implement innovation processes as well as new products and servicies for the maritime economy.

Once the design process (first stage) and the variable, indeces and indicators definition process (second stage) are finished, ATOME deals with the third stage aimed at elaborating, executing, developing and reporting indicators, as well as research information and cooperation.

The observatory will develop its activity taking account of the specific objectives established on the Harvest Atlantic Project. Indicators and reports will be developed in accordance with two iniciatives:

a) Initiative of the Observatory. The other partners of the Harvest Atlantic Project () will add their own initiatives to the initiatives of the University of Cantabria (UC).

b) Initiatives of other public and private organisms. The observatory aims at being a supporting dynamic tool for other R&D projects and initiatives.

Therefore, in this third and final stage, the observatory becomes a dynamic socioeconomic tool both for the generation of indices and for the continuous improvement of its own performance.
